Gachagua welcomed the senior counsel Thursday, describing him as a legal heavyweight whose expertise would strengthen the party’s legislative and oversight capabilities in Parliament.
“I am happy to welcome Nelson Havi SC, one of the country’s legal experts, to walk with us as he pursues representation of the people of Westlands constituency in the National Assembly,” Gachagua said in a statement.
Strategic recruitment of professionals
The DCP leader framed Havi’s entry as part of a broader strategy to attract professionals — including lawyers, economists and policy experts — into active politics.
“The country needs leaders who understand the law, governance and accountability. Oversight is not a slogan; it is a skill. That is why leaders like Havi are critical to our journey,” Gachagua said.
Havi has signaled his intention to contest the Westlands parliamentary seat, a constituency he unsuccessfully ran for in 2022 under the ruling United Democratic Alliance ticket, losing to incumbent Timothy Wanyonyi.
Questions over UDA exit
The prominent lawyer has not formally announced his departure from UDA, though he has spent recent months publicly criticizing government policies on governance, constitutionalism and the rule of law.
His move to DCP coincides with East African Legislative Assembly member Kanini Kega also joining the party, signaling growing momentum for Gachagua’s opposition vehicle.
Gachagua described DCP as “the home of progressive professionals who desire political leadership,” emphasizing the party’s focus on attracting technocrats with policy expertise.
Opposition realignment ahead of 2027
Political analysts view the recruitment of high-profile figures like Havi as an attempt by Gachagua to build credibility and expand DCP’s appeal beyond its current base in central Kenya.
The former deputy president, who was impeached by Parliament in October 2024, has been working to position his party as a viable alternative ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Havi’s legal background and public profile could bolster DCP’s messaging on institutional reforms and accountability — key themes in Kenya’s opposition politics.
